The Pudong New Area in East China's Shanghai – home to some 196 wet markets, comprising one-fourth of the city's total – is witnessing a transformative wave of renovations aimed at making daily life more convenient for its inhabitants.
The ongoing refurbishment efforts prioritize a standardized upgrade approach, integrating innovative features to elevate the overall market experience.
To date, the district has completed refurbishment of 25 wet markets, according to the Commerce Commission of the Pudong New Area.
Key enhancements include the installation of light box signage to delineate different sections within the markets, LED screens displaying real-time price updates and discounts and food safety notices – as well as AI-powered scales that automate weight and price calculations.
These technological additions are said to not only streamline operations, but also to enhance transparency and convenience for shoppers.
Moreover, the refurbished wet markets have been designed with special features catering to the specific needs of surrounding communities.
For instance, the Hangtou market in Hangtou town, spanning an expansive 5,000 square meters, serves as the focal point of a large residential area.
Here, visitors are greeted with an interactive media space at the entrance, offering entertainment for children, while a dedicated activity room on the second floor provides a space for residents to relax and socialize.
Innovative initiatives such as livestreaming platforms integrated into public spaces aim to encourage merchants to engage with customers and promote sales effectively, leveraging popular platforms like Douyin to reach a wider audience.
Notable examples of these community-centered transformations include the Pushang Neighborhood Hub in Sanlin town, where local dishes are offered alongside cooking services that have gained popularity among both seniors and youngsters.
Similarly, the Kangqiao town branch of the Pushang Neighborhood Hub is said to draw inspiration from the renowned retailer Pangdonglai in Xucang, in Henan province.
It offers detailed introductions, recipes and nutritional information for various foods, along with complimentary meat processing services such as custom cutting and sausage-making.
Looking ahead, the Pudong New Area aims to extend the standardized renovations and intelligent management practices to over 100 wet markets – ensuring a consistent and elevated experience across its marketplaces, the authorities have said.
