Zhongshan Hospital, an institution affiliated with Fudan University in Shanghai, is spearheading a digital transformation in healthcare through the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as 5G, internet-of-things, and artificial intelligence.

This innovative approach is reshaping the hospital environment, elevating patient care standards, and optimizing operational efficiency.

Within the hospital's wards, the presence of robots has become a common sight, undertaking a myriad of tasks ranging from delivering medications and equipment to conducting disinfection procedures. Advanced, large-scale robotic models are assisting doctors in analyzing patient data and providing diagnostic insights, while AI-powered digital assistants are swiftly addressing patient inquiries, thereby enhancing the overall healthcare experience. IoT devices are playing a pivotal role by alerting nurses when infusions are nearing completion, reducing the necessity for frequent patient calls and improving workflow efficiency.

The introduction of smart wards at Zhongshan Hospital has revolutionized patient care delivery by incorporating electronic patient cards that display real-time information and facilitate data collection through IoT devices. This seamless integration and analysis of patient metrics have ushered in a paperless workflow for nurses, significantly enhancing efficiency and accuracy during shift changes, as confirmed by the hospital.

Zhang Yuxia, director of the nursing department, emphasized that the smart ward initiative has not only streamlined nursing operations by integrating data but has also enhanced communication channels, leading to improved patient monitoring and risk management. Yu Zhenghong, chief nurse of the surgical department, lauded this advancement for enabling nurses to redirect their focus towards patient care rather than administrative tasks.

In the operating rooms, a multitude of robots are supporting logistics, waste management, and sterilization processes, resulting in a 40 percent increase in efficiency. Furthermore, the Liver Surgery Assistant platform is empowering doctors by leveraging AI-driven models and historical data to assess and plan patient care strategies effectively.

To facilitate this digital revolution, the hospital said it has received support from Shanghai Telecom, which has provided specialized cloud services, robust medical networks, and stringent security measures, ensuring the seamless integration and operation of these transformative technologies within the healthcare setting.
