Shanghai prepares for 7th citywide traffic survey
In a concerted effort to enhance transportation planning and address critical traffic issues, the Shanghai Municipal Transportation Commission and the Municipal Bureau of Statistics have announced the commencement of its seventh citywide traffic survey, featuring comprehensive home visits set to begin on Oct 14 and extend through the end of 2024. The research findings from this extensive survey are slated for release in 2025.
Encompassing a broad spectrum of transportation facets, the survey will delve into city transportation dynamics, interprovincial transit patterns, cargo transportation logistics, private-owned car management and usage trends, as well as key transportation challenges facing the city. The home visit survey aims to cover every street and town across Shanghai, engaging approximately 50,000 units in total to ensure a comprehensive and representative sample.
Trained and certified inspectors equipped with official stamped documents will conduct home visits, engaging participants in a two-stage process involving initial reservations and subsequent administration of official questionnaires.
Shanghai's legacy of conducting comprehensive traffic surveys dates back to 1986, with subsequent surveys carried out in 1995, 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019.
The forthcoming survey results are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping future transportation strategies and initiatives in Shanghai. The data gleaned from the survey will not only inform comprehensive transportation planning efforts but will also serve as a foundational reference point for the development of Shanghai's "15th Five-Year Plan" spanning from 2026 to 2030, guiding policy research and strategic decision-making processes to optimize the city's transportation infrastructure and services.
