Shanghai has launched a global campaign to collect a bilingual tourism slogan in Chinese and English, with submissions open until 11:59 pm on April 6.

The initiative was announced at the Shanghai Tourism Development Conference on March 21.

At the conference, Shanghai also introduced the Promoters of the City initiative, inviting both Chinese and foreign participants to serve as city ambassadors.

Their role will be to provide tourism-related consultation services and promote Shanghai to the world.

Shanghai welcomed a record-breaking 390 million tourists in 2024, achieving all-time highs in both domestic and international tourism revenue, as well as total tourism earnings, official data showed.

As part of its efforts to become the gateway to China for international tourists, Shanghai also unveiled Hu Xiaoyou (沪小游), a smart multilingual tourism agent that offers one-stop information services for visitors.

Powered by AI, Hu Xiaoyou, or "Little Shanghai Guide" in English, supports multiple languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, and is accessible via WeChat or Alipay.

With the help of this digital assistant, travelers can customize their itineraries, receive AI-powered route recommendations, and stay informed about the latest festivals, events, cultural exhibitions, and urban tourism highlights in Shanghai.

The assistant provides information on a wide range of activities, such as red tourism, industrial tourism, popular exhibitions, and visits to ancient towns showcasing intangible cultural heritage.

By integrating real-time data on commercial outlets, tourist flows, traffic conditions and city weather, Hu Xiaoyou provides a comprehensive overview of city services and enables easy access to the city's cultural and tourism offerings.
