Construction recently kicked off in Shanghai's Putuo district on the fourth and final phase of the district's scenic lighting upgrades along Suzhou Creek, according to the district's landscaping and city appearance department.

This phase is expected to be completed by the end of the year. By then, the entire Putuo section, which covers half of the 42-kilometer Suzhou Creek shoreline, will be fully illuminated with scenic lighting.

The final-phase project features energy-efficient lighting equipment connected to Putuo's intelligent lighting control system. The system enables dynamic lighting modes, including standard settings and special displays for holidays.

The project covers major parks such as the Suzhou Creek Half Marathon Park, where lighting will be enhanced to support nighttime running.

The upgrades will also include themed sculptures and interactive screens at the park’s entrances and exits.

Putuo's lighting project along Suzhou Creek began in June 2020 and forms part of Shanghai's broader plan to install lights all along its two major rivers — the Huangpu River and the Suzhou Creek — by the end of 2027.

According to the Shanghai Landscape Lighting Plan (2024-35), the city aims to become a global model for urban landscape lighting by 2035.
