Art Shanghai showcases Chinese female directors' works in Paris
The Art Shanghai European National Treasures project, originating in Shanghai, has recently brought a cinema exhibition to the Cinémathèque Française, France’s national film archive and museum based in Paris.
Running from May 29 to June 2, this event showcased 11 films by female directors from various generations, marking the first comprehensive exhibition of Chinese female directors' works at the Cinémathèque Française.
The screening featured a selection of films that are making their debut in France, offering French audiences a fresh perspective on the diverse and rich cinematic creations by Chinese women.
This collaboration between Art Shanghai and the Cinémathèque Française is a continuation of the "Réponse de Femmes: Chinese-French Women's Cinema" project, which was initially held at Bund 33 in Shanghai in June 2024, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Sino-French diplomatic relations.
Yu Weiqi, the president of Art Shanghai, said the project aimed to transcend boundaries between countries through movies, supporting female filmmakers with more stages and opportunities to bring more diverse perspectives and voices to the film industry.
The exhibition not only highlights the creative achievements of Chinese female directors but also serves as a platform to foster dialogue and understanding between different cultures.
By showcasing these films in Paris, the event aims to bridge the gap between Eastern and Western cinematic traditions, offering a glimpse into the unique storytelling and artistic visions of Chinese women in film, Yu added.
