Shanghai approves modern agricultural zone in Chongming
Shanghai has approved a plan to establish a modern agricultural industrial park on Hengsha Island in Chongming district.
The park will cover an area of 106.14 square kilometers and serve as an integrated hub for agriculture, ecology, technological innovation, and leisure. By 2035, its annual output value is projected to reach 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion).
Designed as a world-class demonstration zone for green agriculture, the blueprint sets out detailed measures for transportation, infrastructure, and public facilities.
Emphasizing ecological protection, the plan introduces a denser and more natural water network by creating numerous smaller waterways rather than preserving vast expanses of water.
Real estate development will follow a dispersed cluster model, avoiding large-scale, contiguous projects to preserve the island's rustic character.
Beyond farming and aquaculture, the park is envisioned as a hub of agricultural innovation, with dedicated space in its core area for research and development of new technologies.
From green farming to agri-tourism, the Hengsha agricultural zone is set to build a complete agricultural industrial chain, delivering benefits to enterprises, visitors, and residents alike.
