China will expand the initiative to develop Shanghai into an international science and technology innovation center to cover all four provincial-level regions in the Yangtze River Delta, according to the Central Economic Work Conference, which concluded on Dec 11.

The conference identified the Shanghai (Yangtze River Delta) International Science and Technology Innovation Center as one of the key priorities for next year, alongside the centers in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, underscoring its role in advancing regional innovation and coordinated development.

Relevant authorities are formulating a plan to build a science and technology innovation hub across the YRD, which includes Shanghai as well as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui provinces. A series of practical measures is expected to be rolled out to advance the initiative.
