Shanghai's performing arts market tops nation in 2025
Shanghai cemented its status as Asia's premier performing arts hub in 2025, with a steady influx of global artists and growing box office revenues.
The city staged 61,400 commercial performances, attracting 26.85 million attendees and generating 5.85 billion yuan ($847 million) in ticket sales, marking year-on-year increases of 7.7 percent, 5.5 percent, and 13.2 percent, respectively.
Both the number of performances and total box office revenue ranked first among Chinese cities.
Shanghai continued to draw international artists, with 39 overseas singers and musicians, including Katy Perry and Mariah Carey, staging 57 concerts. These events welcomed nearly 520,000 fans and generated over 500 million yuan in box office revenue, with more than 60 percent of attendees coming from outside of the city.
Shanghai remained China's largest musical theater market, accounting for 56 percent of all musical performances nationwide. In 2025, 18 original international musical productions, including Les Misérables, SIX, and Cats, were staged in the city for over 300 performances, attracting more than 350,000 theatergoers.
New performance spaces continued to thrive. Across the city's five major commercial complexes, 65 new performance spaces staged over 6,000 shows throughout the year, drawing nearly 500,000 audiences and generating more than 100 million yuan in box office revenue.
Private performing troupes are further enriching the cultural landscape, presenting a wide array of productions across the city.
Wei Zhi, head of the Shanghai Performing Arts Association, highlighted that the sector's expanding scale, robust market supply, efficient operations, and diverse structure are key drivers of the city's cultural vitality.
