The annual Shanghai Science Festival will run from May 23 to 31, featuring nearly 2,000 activities citywide, including exhibitions, science-themed pop-up cafes, ticket discounts at popular science venues, and limited-time public access to research platforms.

Shanghai Science and Technology Museum reopens

The upgraded Shanghai Science and Technology Museum will open to the public after its facelift on May 23, the first day of the festival. 

The renewed museum now features 10 permanent exhibition areas covering cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum technology, energy materials, aerospace, ecology, and health.

During the festival, visitors can participate in interactive activities, including original board games themed around China's national parks on May 23 and 24.

Additional temporary exhibitions and immersive experiences are planned for later in the year, including showcases on the Future Science Prize, AI innovations, and an immersive sci-fi fairy-tale experience inspired by writer Liu Cixin's The Fire Keeper.

Discounts at 38 popular science venues

More than 250 popular science venues across Shanghai will host activities during the festival. Among these, 38 venues will offer ticket discounts, including popular destinations such as Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park, Shanghai Wild Animal Park, and Shanghai Greenhouse. 

Other citywide programs include the "Explore Nature in Shanghai" campaign, offering 38 activities in five categories, from night observation and gardening workshops to study camps. Pudong New Area will host more than 1,000 activities as part of its science carnival, while Huangpu district will set up a science market on East Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street for residents and tourists.

Science-themed cafes at city landmarks

This year's festival will also feature six science-themed pop-up cafes at major city landmarks — the Bund FTC, the Hengshan Road-Fuxing Road historical area, West Bund, Huaihai Road, Anfu Road, and the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum.

Visitors can post science-related questions on a "question wall" and enjoy special "Love Science" cafe sets, transforming ordinary coffee stops into interactive science experiences.
