Zero-tariff policy for African goods sees fruitful returns
Shanghai Customs announced on July 6 the positive results of China's expanded zero-tariff treatment to all African countries that have diplomatic relations with it, which took effect on May 1.
Since its implementation, the value of imports from the 53 African countries benefiting from this measure has exceeded 1.2 billion yuan ($176.8 million), resulting in total tariff reductions of 120 million yuan.
Imports of African agricultural produce have maintained steady growth. Under the zero-tariff policy, the value of imported African fruits eligible for tariff-free treatment reached 13.66 million yuan, reducing the import cost of each container of fresh fruit by roughly 17 percent.
To preserve the quality of fresh-cut flowers, Shanghai Customs has established a 24/7 green channel, developed tailored clearance plans, and allocated resources to streamline logistics and ensure rapid, high-quality market entry.
The zero-tariff policy has also benefited imports of industrial components. With customs guidance and facilitation measures, companies have improved customs clearance efficiency and begun realizing tax benefits more quickly.
Shanghai Customs said it will continue to promote mutually beneficial China-Africa trade through efficient supervision and services, further expanding market access for high-quality African products.
