Two humanoid robots have recently begun directing traffic at a crossroads near the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center in Pudong New Area.

The robots, developed by SkyEnGen, a Baoshan district-based robot company, serve as auxiliary police officers, demonstrating a new model of human-robot cooperation that enables more intelligent and attentive traffic management.

With a lifelike appearance and a range of functions, the robots are familiar with traffic conditions around the museum and can answer visitors’ questions in both English and Chinese.

They are equipped with a multimodal visual perception algorithm, which allows them to direct traffic by identifying traffic light signals, patrol the streets, detect traffic violations such as riding an electric bicycle without a helmet and running red lights, and provide voice reminders to encourage compliance.

The robots will continue to be improved in their traffic management capabilities and are expected to be integrated into the regular work of traffic police in the future.
