East Nanjing Road metro station upgrades services
Shanghai Metro's East Nanjing Road Station, serving Lines 2 and 10, has completed a service upgrade that expands luggage storage, improves passenger flow, and introduces the first integrated service center in the Shanghai Metro network.
Located near the Bund and Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, the station serves both daily commuters and large numbers of visitors, particularly during the summer travel season.
To better serve the growing number of visitors, the station has expanded its luggage storage capacity. The number of luggage locker banks has increased from eight to 36. The lockers are distributed across several areas without obstructing main passageways, with signs directing passengers to storage lockers.
Lockers of different sizes can accommodate suitcases, backpacks, and shopping bags. Visitors can store their luggage after exploring Nanjing Road, visit the Bund luggage-free, and then collect their luggage before taking the metro to their hotels.
The station has also repositioned its fare gates to bring the restroom inside the paid area. Passengers can access it after entering the station without having to exit and pass through the gates again.
To ease evening rush-hour congestion, the station has rerouted passenger flows and created more space in the concourse, helping separate transferring passengers from those entering or leaving.
The upgrade also includes an integrated service center, the first of its kind in the Shanghai Metro network. The pilot combines a KFC restaurant with self-service ticketing equipment, offering both travel assistance and dining in one convenient location.
Passengers can use the machines to view the metro network map, train departure information, and station exit guides. They can also handle ticket-related issues, such as transit card malfunctions or being unable to exit through the fare gates.
KFC employees at the center can help passengers resolve ticketing issues, locate station exits, and find suitable metro routes.
The pilot service will continue to be refined based on passenger feedback, according to the station officials.
Moreover, station employees are posted near fare gates, luggage storage areas, and other busy locations to provide directions and assistance.
