Tesla's 10 millionth electric vehicle rolled off the production line on July 30, with its Gigafactory Shanghai contributing nearly half of the company's cumulative global output.

The milestone made Tesla the world's first automaker to produce 10 million electric vehicles.

Since delivering its first China-made Model 3 vehicles in December 2019, the Shanghai plant has produced more than 4.5 million vehicles in about six and a half years. It has also become Tesla's primary global manufacturing base for export.

The plant delivered nearly 468,000 vehicles in the first half of 2026, up 28.4 percent year-on-year, accounting for more than 54 percent of Tesla's global production.

By the end of June, global sales of the Model 3 surpassed 3 million units, including more than 1 million in China. Global sales of the Model Y exceeded 5 million units, with more than 2 million sold in China.

During the same period, the Model Y led SUV retail sales in China, while the Model 3 led the country's midsize battery-electric vehicle market.

The Model Y L, a large six-seat luxury SUV whose design, development, and manufacturing are led by Tesla's China team, is being rolled out in several overseas markets.

The performance comes as new-energy vehicles take an increasing share of China's passenger vehicle market. Their retail penetration rate reached 54.1 percent in the first half of 2026 and rose to 62.8 percent in June.
