Shanghai this week: Weather, cycling race, and performances
This week, Shanghai will experience a mix of overcast skies and showers, with temperatures remaining moderate. The new school term begins on Sept 1, and several major events, including a cycling race, a charity week, and thrilling soccer matches, are also on the calendar. Here is what to watch for.
Weather: Cloudy with scattered showers
The week begins with cloudy skies and scattered showers or thunderstorms, with some areas expecting moderate to heavy rain. Another round of rain is expected later on Sept 1 as cold and warm air masses converge. Temperatures will drop noticeably, with the high reaching only 28 C on Sept 2. Overcast and rainy conditions are expected to persist through Sept 5, with highs at or below 30 C.
New school term begins
Primary, junior high, senior high, and secondary vocational schools across Shanghai will start the new semester on Sept 1.
Shanghai expands use of medical insurance account balances
Starting Sept 1, Shanghai will expand the permitted uses of funds carried over from prior years in employee medical insurance personal accounts, helping reduce out-of-pocket healthcare costs.
Tour of Shanghai cycling race
The Tour of Shanghai: New Cities 2026 cycling race will take place from Sept 4 to 6. The race will connect Shanghai's five new cities: Jiading, Songjiang, Qingpu, Fengxian, and Nanhui.
A total of 21 top professional teams from 12 countries will compete, with traffic controls in effect throughout the event.
Shanghai Charity Week 2026
This year's Shanghai Charity Week runs from Aug 31 to Sept 6, with events spanning all 16 districts and bringing charitable activities to neighborhoods, commercial areas, and communities.
Soccer matches
The Chinese Football Association Cup quarterfinals will take place, featuring the following matches for the two Shanghai teams:
- Sept 1, 7:35 pm: Shandong Taishan vs Shanghai Port
- Sept 1, 7:35 pm: Dalian Yingbo vs Shanghai Shenhua
Additionally, the 26th round of the Chinese Super League will see the Shanghai teams in action:
- Sept 5, 7:35 pm: Shanghai Port vs Beijing Guoan
- Sept 6, 7 pm: Chongqing Tonglianglong vs Shanghai Shenhua
The 3 Vampires Concert
When: Sept 2-3
Where: Shanghai Culture Square, Huangpu district
The concert brings together, for the first time, four leading performers from the German-language musical theater scene — Mark Seibert, Jan Ammann, Drew Sarich, and Nienke Latten — for a special performance celebrating the venue's 15th anniversary.
Dance Theater: The Vegetarian
When: Sept 4-6
Where: Theatre Young, Yangpu district
Adapted from the novel by South Korean author Han Kang, the 2024 Nobel laureate in literature, the production follows a woman's gradual rejection of food and her progression toward an almost plant-like state of existence.
