The first Shanghai Style retail and cultural space, a limited-time pop-up by Bailian Inc, opened at Shanghai No 1 Department Store on East Nanjing Road on Sept 11.

Bailian said the pop-up aims to create new shopping experiences, develop new customization-centered business models, and explore new models of industrial collaboration.

The space centers on four themes: Eastern aesthetics, Shanghai Style, Eastern intangible cultural heritage, and Shanghai Gifts, bringing together time-honored Chinese brands, Shanghai-style craftsmanship, and contemporary design.

More than 360 products highlighting Shanghai's rich cultural heritage and innovative vitality are being showcased, including a 4.5-meter-tall giant pipa by the Chinese musical instrument brand Dunhuang and an officially licensed tea gift box for the 48th WorldSkills Competition.

With the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, the pop-up also offers interactive experiences centered on tea culture, intangible cultural heritage handicrafts, Shanghai flavors, and festive gift-giving. These activities allow residents and visitors to experience the city's distinctive cultural character up close.

Using Shanghai No 1 Department Store as a real-world retail setting, the event explores and tests an operating model that links urban cultural content, consumer experiences, and the conversion of cultural content into products.

It also brings together government agencies, brands, designers, inheritors of intangible cultural heritage, cultural institutions, and industry resources, while testing content and building partnerships for the future launch of long-term Shanghai Style commercial spaces.

The pop-up will run through Sept 27, according to Bailian Inc.
