Railway stations in Shanghai are expected to handle 8.53 million passenger departures during the upcoming holiday travel rush, up 8.03 percent year-on-year.

The 16-day travel period will run from Sept 23 to Oct 8, covering the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday.

Passenger numbers are expected to peak at about 800,000 on Oct 1, the National Day, and at around 770,000 on Sept 25, the Mid-Autumn Festival.

To meet increased travel demand, the railway stations will implement a peak-period timetable and add 146 pairs of passenger trains on popular routes to Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Fujian, Shandong, and other provinces, 24 more pairs than last year.

Stations will closely monitor ticket availability and waitlist data and take timely measures to increase capacity, including adding trains and coupling multiple-unit train sets.

They will also keep waiting rooms open overnight depending on train operations and passenger demand, making it easier for passengers to enter the stations and wait for their trains.
