The original Broadway musical Chicago will return to Shanghai with its 30th anniversary edition, running at Shanghai Majestic Theatre from Nov 5 to 8. Tickets will go on sale across various platforms on Sept 22.

The Shanghai engagement is part of an international tour marking the 30th anniversary of the musical's acclaimed 1996 revival. Tony Award winners created the set, costume, lighting, and sound designs, while an international cast will take on the leading roles.

Chicago was previously staged at the Majestic Theatre from 2018 to 2019 and proved popular with Shanghai audiences.

Co-created by Bob Fosse, John Kander, and Fred Ebb, Chicago made its Broadway debut in 1975. The musical is adapted from two real-life murder cases that took place in Chicago in 1924. It has won more than 50 major international awards, including six Tony Awards, five Drama Desk Awards, two Olivier Awards, and one Grammy Award.

To date, Chicago has been performed more than 36,000 times in 525 cities across 38 countries, and seen by over 35 million people, making it one of the longest-running American musicals worldwide.

Chicago is known for its minimalist staging rather than elaborate sets. The choreography makes extensive use of simple props such as chairs, hats, and steel frames, while the live orchestra performs onstage as part of the show.

During its 2024 to 2025 China tour, Chicago was staged in more than 10 Chinese cities and received the title of Most Popular Imported Original Musical at the annual ceremony of the China Musical Association.
