Cross-border travel through Shanghai rises during National Day holiday
Shanghai's border inspection authority processed 809,000 inbound and outbound passenger trips during the National Day holiday from Oct 1 to 7, a 3.4 percent year-on-year increase.
Cross-border traffic increased as holiday demand for cross-border tourism and visits to family and friends rose. The city's two international airports, Pudong and Hongqiao, recorded 763,000 cross-border trips, while cruise terminals handled 46,000.
Chinese mainland residents made 581,000 border crossings, up 4.1 percent from a year earlier. Foreign nationals made 89,000 inbound trips through Shanghai ports of entry during the holiday period, with more than 50,000, or nearly 60 percent, entering under visa-free or 240-hour visa-free transit policies.
The holiday coincided with the 2026 Rolex Shanghai Masters, which drew tennis players, event staff, and fans from around the world to Shanghai.
