Shanghai unveils plan to build global aviation hub
A strategic guideline aimed at building Shanghai into a world-class international aviation hub was unveiled on Oct 20. According to the blueprint, Shanghai will be able to handle 200 million passenger trips and 5.4 million metric tons of cargo and mail annually by 2035.
According to the guideline, which was released during the 2026 North Bund Forum held in Shanghai from Oct 20 to 21, a comprehensive international aviation hub with global influence will take shape in the 2050s.
Under the plan, Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, and the new airport scheduled to be built in Nantong of Jiangsu province, will operate as an integrated, highly efficient system.
Specifically, with the completion of the fourth phase of the Pudong airport by 2030, Shanghai's annual passenger throughput is expected to reach 150 million trips, while cargo-and-mail throughput will grow to 4.7 million tons, laying the foundation for a leading aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region.
With the theme "Common Challenge, Shared Mission — Promoting the Resilient Development of Global Shipping & Aviation", the North Bund Forum aims to explore how to promote the resilient development of global shipping and aviation.
