Vienna State Opera to return to Shanghai in 2028
The Vienna State Opera will return to Shanghai in autumn 2028 for a residency.
The plan follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding by the Center for China Shanghai International Arts Festival and the Vienna State Opera on Oct 17.
The planned residency will mark Vienna State Opera's return to China with fully staged opera productions after more than three decades.
The 25th China Shanghai International Arts Festival opened on Oct 17, the same day the Shanghai Grand Opera House, a new cultural landmark on the banks of the Huangpu River, was inaugurated.
Three festival-curated productions — Tosca, Aida, and Der Rosenkavalier — will make their Asian premieres in Shanghai, their only stop in China in November.
The Vienna State Opera, one of the world's most renowned opera houses, opened in 1869 and has a repertoire of around 150 works, one of the opera houses worldwide with the richest repertoires today. Its annual season runs for 10 months across several venues and stages. During that period, its main stage presents around 300 performances spanning approximately 60 opera and ballet productions.
