Qipao dresses set to shine in Zhangyuan area
This June, Shanghai will once wow folks with its special signature blend of tradition and style as the 6•6 Haipai Qipao Cultural Festival unfolds in Zhangyuan — the ever-popular historical and cultural block in the city's Jing'an district.
On June 1-7, the festival will pay tribute to the timeless elegance of the qipao — the traditional Chinese dress for women — while weaving in elements of Shanghai's distinctive Haipai culture, also known as Shanghai style. It's the city's unique blend of traditional Chinese and Western influences — characterized by openness, diversity and innovation.
The week-long event will feature high-end bespoke qipao brands and neo-Chinese style fashion labels, offering visitors a rare glimpse into the intricate world of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design.
Exhibition zones hosted by heritage brands like Longfeng Cheongsam will share stories of century-old techniques — bridging past and present through fabric and form.
What's more, daily fashion shows are expected to bring unexpected surprises, transforming Zhangyuan's shikumen alleyways into elegant catwalks.
From exclusive themed runway events to a heartwarming parent-child qipao show, the program is set to highlight the glorious diversity of Chinese aesthetics and the rich storytelling power of traditional dress.
Adding to the fun, June 1 will be dedicated to family-centered activities, co-hosted by the Jing'an Women's Federation and Hsin Yi Picture Book.
The day will feature parent-child qipao shows, handicraft workshops and cultural storytime sessions — offering kids a joyful and interactive introduction to Chinese heritage.
Visitors are also being encouraged to wear qipao dresses as they stroll about a specially prepared route in Zhangyuan, which integrates the area's most photogenic spots with its architectural and cultural history.
Participants who complete photo challenges along the way can claim exclusive souvenirs.
In a nod to the evolving role of cultural events in boosting urban vitality, the festival will also feature special promotions at nearby retail outlets and brand pop-ups.
