'Sesame Street' meets contemporary art in Shanghai exhibition
A new exhibition, Sesame Street Magical Art World, has opened at the Chi K11 Art Museum inside the Shanghai K11 Art Mall, giving Chinese audiences a fresh way to experience one of the world's most beloved children's shows.
Since its debut in 1969, Sesame Street has been cherished by generations worldwide, inspiring artists and brands to collaborate with its iconic characters.
This exhibition continues that legacy, bringing together 27 contemporary artists from around the world. Through paintings, sculptures, and installations, they reimagine familiar figures such as Elmo and Big Bird, infusing them with new cultural perspectives and creative expression.
One of the highlights is the participation of Liu Yuxin, known in English as Xin Liu, a Chinese singer, dancer, and producer who serves as a crossover artist. Her work blends traditional motifs with pop elements, bringing the Sesame Street cast new life while bridging tradition and modernity.
The show balances academic depth with pop appeal, offering visitors not only striking artworks but also immersive installations, limited-edition merchandise, and Shanghai-exclusive releases. It invites audiences to move beyond passive viewing and become part of a creative community, sparking imagination, dialogue, and cultural exchange.
