Shanghai marks 30 years of Xizang assistance with Tibetan bazaar debut
As Shanghai marks the 30th anniversary of its paired assistance to the Xizang autonomous region, the first Tibetan Bazaar: Specialty Products from Shigatse City will open on Nov 8 on Daxue Road in Yangpu district.
The bazaar will showcase the richness of Tibetan culture and the distinctive characteristics of Shigatse through a curated selection of products. Visitors can explore highland specialties such as Lazi county's rapeseed oil and Ngamring county's yak beef, representing the nutritious and flavorful culinary traditions of the plateau. Traditional craftsmanship will also take center stage, including Tibetan incense and pulu (traditional woolen) scarves that reflect generations of heritage.
In addition, the event presents modern lifestyle products derived from Tibetan ingredients, such as saffron face masks and Yadong county's mugwort sachets, along with convenient foods like barley beef noodle soup. Creative cultural souvenirs, including leather accessories and fridge magnets, will offer visitors memorable keepsakes. Eventgoers may also dress in traditional Tibetan attire and receive a free 6-inch printed photo as a personalized "Shigatse moment" in the heart of Shanghai.
Showcasing products from five counties, the bazaar will be divided into four thematic zones. The Shanghai–Xizang cooperation zone will display co-branded products and highlight e-commerce achievements under the assistance program. The highland agricultural products zone will provide opportunities to sample specialties from the snowy plateau, while the cultural heritage zone will introduce the stories behind Thangka painting and invite visitors to try related crafts. The Shigatse e-commerce zone will feature livestreaming demonstrations and online channels for purchasing local specialties.
Beyond the two-day bazaar, the "Tibetan Products Enter Shanghai" pop-up series will continue across the city throughout November, appearing at BLink, Shanghai Normal University, and other venues under the Shanghai Federation of Trade Unions' marketplace program. The initiative will further expand to the University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, community areas, and commercial hubs, helping Shigatse's signature products reach more workplaces and neighborhoods — bringing the warmth of the Xizang autonomous region to more residents in Shanghai.
