As the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix prepares to return to the Shanghai International Circuit from March 13 to 15, the city has kicked off its race week celebrations. On the evening of March 8, the 2026 Checkered Flag Carnival began with an opening ceremony at the Gate M West Bund Dream Center in Xuhui district.

Under the theme "Shanghai Let's Meet!", the carnival connects four major landmarks: Xuhui Riverside, the Shanghai International Circuit in Jiading district, the North Bund in Hongkou district, and Baoshan Riverside. This city-wide celebration aims to bring the excitement of racing to both residents and tourists.

Exhibitions at the Xuhui and Baoshan venues opened on March 8. Xuhui Riverside has been transformed into a "racing city" featuring live broadcasts, themed exhibitions, and stage performances. A highlight of the venue is the exhibition dedicated to Zhou Guanyu, the first Chinese driver in F1 history, which traces his journey to the top of the sport. Visitors can also explore classic car displays and enjoy repurposed industrial landmarks that now serve as themed social spaces.

Meanwhile, Baoshan Riverside is hosting activities under a "giant" theme. The area features massive installations, including a giant racing helmet and large-scale maritime displays. Between March 8 and 15, the Shanghai Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal in Baoshan is expected to welcome six cruise ships. Notably, two major vessels, the Spectrum of the Seas and the Adora Magic City, will both dock on March 13, bringing nearly 10,000 visitors to join the festivities.

24-hour excitement and global services

The celebration will continue to expand as the race weekend approaches. The North Bund will introduce a karting experience and operate 24 hours a day for three days, keeping the energy alive around the clock. Additionally, the Fountain Square at the Shanghai International Circuit will open from March 13 to 15, offering live music and car culture festivals for fans at the heart of the action.

To improve accessibility, organizers have introduced custom cruise boats that travel along the Huangpu River to connect the venues at Xuhui Riverside and North Bund.

For international visitors, a WeChat mini program has been launched to provide instant information in both English and Chinese, and bilingual signs are placed throughout all venues to ensure a welcoming and convenient environment for racing fans from around the world.
