Shanghai after dark: A journey from dusk to daybreak (chapter one)

From dinner and shopping at dusk to late-night music, dancing, and early-morning walks, Shanghai takes on a new rhythm as the hours pass. Follow the city through seven chapters, spanning 6 pm to 6 am.

As daylight fades, shopfronts glow, the aroma of dinner drifts through the streets, and the city unwinds after a busy day.

In & Out Yunnan Restaurant

Address: Room 102, Building 22, No 72 Xingguo Road, Changning district

Opening hours:

  • Tuesday to Sunday: 11 am to 1 am the following day
  • Monday: 11 am to 10 pm

The restaurant is widely regarded as one of Shanghai's most wonderful Yunnan restaurants. More than 95 percent of its staff members are from Yunnan province, bringing a strong sense of regional character to the dining experience. The restaurant also serves its own house-made fruit wines.

Shanghai Village

  • Monday to Thursday: 10 am to 10 pm

A popular destination for shopping and short getaways, Shanghai Village takes on a softer glow after dark. Its open-air, European-inspired streets, fountains, and lakeside spaces create a relaxed setting for shopping, dining, seasonal markets, entertainment, or an evening stroll.

Casa Casa

Address: No 150 Yueyang Road, Xuhui district

Opening hours: 10 am to 7 pm

After moving from Anfu Road, Casa Casa now operates out of a historic three-story villa on Yueyang Road. As one of China's first boutique shops to feature top international furniture and home-design brands, the store showcases its curated selections across the villa.

1940 Nineteen Forty

Address: Room 103, Building 19, Columbia Circle, No 1262 West Yan'an Road, Changning district

Opening hours: 10 am to 8 pm

Named after the founding year of Forever, a long-established Shanghai bicycle brand, 1940 Nineteen Forty celebrates the city's cycling heritage. The store offers bicycle assembly and repair services, accessories, and cycling gear, and regularly organizes urban cycling events.

Banana+ Bouldering

Address: Room B03-104, B1, The Lightbox, No 218 West Tianmu Road, Jing'an district

With a spacious climbing area and plenty of beginner-friendly routes, Banana+ Bouldering is a welcoming place for first-time climbers. Its location in The Lightbox also puts restaurants, cafes, and other leisure options nearby.

 

Theater

Sleep No More at the McKinnon Hotel Shanghai

Address: No 1013 West Beijing Road, Jing'an district

At Sleep No More, the five-story McKinnon Hotel becomes the stage. Instead of watching from fixed seats, audience members are free to explore the hotel as the story unfolds around them, opening doors, discovering hidden spaces, and following different characters through a series of interconnected scenes. Each route reveals a different side of the story, ensuring that no two performances are experienced in quite the same way. The production runs through Aug 30.
