Xintiandi Dongtaili shopping area to open Sept 29
Shanghai's Xintiandi is expanding this fall with the launch of Xintiandi Dongtaili, which will begin trial operations on Sept 29.
Located along the historic Dongtai Road, the specialty shopping area transforms a century-old street into a cultural and lifestyle destination.
Anchored by more than a dozen cultural landmarks, including the former residence of late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) scholar Zhang Taiyan (1869-1936) and several art centers, Dongtaili blends heritage with modernity. A series of cultural programs will further strengthen its role as a hub of creativity and community life.
Dining on the terrace
True to Xintiandi's reputation for eating outdoors with fresh air and beautiful surroundings, Dongtaili will elevate the experience with a cosmopolitan yet distinctly local culinary scene. More than 60 percent of the first wave of restaurants will feature terraces or outdoor seating, blending lush greenery with contemporary design.
The dining lineup spans Italian, Japanese, and Spanish cuisine alongside a curated selection of Chinese flavors, from Sichuan and Guangdong to Guizhou. Several brands are also making their Shanghai debut here, offering fresh discoveries for food lovers.
A hub for sports and fashion
Reflecting Shanghai's growing passion for active lifestyles, Dongtaili is introducing leading sportswear and fashion brands. Highlights include The North Face's new premium full-range concept store, Under Armour Outdoor's first flagship in China, and Onitsuka Tiger's latest concept outlet.
Homegrown names are also in the spotlight, with Pelliot's Shanghai flagship and Oneup's first-ever national store launching here. Many of these shops will feature striking two-story facades, creating a distinctive and upscale retail streetscape.
A boost for the night economy
Nightlife is another major focus. Dongtaili is introducing first-of-its-kind venues and new formats for all-day and late-night socializing. Restaurants will stay open longer and feature curated cocktail menus, bringing a "bistro after dark" vibe that enhances the area's nightlife appeal.
Culture in every corner
Dongtaili is also doubling as an open-air art gallery. The Layers of Memory photography exhibition by Sebastian Correa captures the charm of city alleys, while the Dongtai Cabinet public art program transforms 16 storefront doors into exhibition spaces. Together, they turn the shopping area into a living canvas where art and daily life meet.
