International students embrace Chinese New Year traditions in Shanghai
Over 20 international students from Shanghai International Studies University visited Quyanglu subdistrict on Jan 17 to join the residents in celebrating the upcoming Year of the Snake.
The activity commenced with the students learning Shanghai-styled yangge (a type of Chinese folk dance), under the guidance of the Shanghai Yangge Association.

Afterward, the students and local children made dumplings together. A piece of candy was hidden in one of the dumplings, symbolizing the heartfelt wishes for the students in the coming year.

A Vietnamese student shared that in Vietnam, New Year celebrations involve making sticky rice dumplings, and this was her first time making Chinese dumplings.
As the dumplings cooked, the students experienced the art of calligraphy. A Ukrainian student wrote some couplet characters on-site, planning to adorn her dormitory door with them.

The activity concluded with students and community residents enjoying the freshly cooked dumplings while festive music was played in the background.
