"Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would perform on such a big stage in my very first year at Fudan."

Margarita Cherkasskaya, a first-year Russian PhD student majoring in Political Science at Fudan University's School of International Relations and Public Affairs, shared her busy yet vibrant first semester. She played the role of Lin Daiyu in the Yueju Opera version of Dream of the Red Chamber at the 2025 Fudan University Spring Festival Gathering.

"I love participating in various student activities at Fudan University. They provide me with the perfect chance to interact with others and express myself freely!"

Driven by her passion for dance, Cherkasskaya was eager to join dance clubs to connect with like-minded individuals and make new friends.

"These activities help me cope with the academic pressure," said Cherkasskaya. Immersing herself in these activities allows her to take a break from the rigors of her doctoral studies. "Teachers and my family were astonished to see this side of me on stage. It was a memorable experience."

Getting to know Fudan

"The relaxing atmosphere in Shanghai, some advice from my tutor, and a chance encounter brought me here. Shanghai’s street layout is complex and full of surprises, and people here are lively and open-minded."

When Cherkasskaya's master's professors learned of her intent to pursue further studies in China, they highly recommended Fudan, considering her academic direction.

During her master's program, Cherkasskaya met Francesca Ran Rositudottir, a PhD student at Fudan. They became good friends. Rositudottir introduced her to different aspects of Fudan. "One thing led to another, and I finally came to Fudan. I believe I've made a good choice," she said.

Courses that not only impart knowledge

Cherkasskaya noted that Chinese universities often place an emphasis on student presentations as a key component of the learning experience. One of her favorite courses last semester — Analysis of China's Peripheral Security and Diplomacy — used this approach. "These presentations are not just busy work. They're truly rewarding."

The course Research Methods in Social Sciences also exceeded her expectations.

"I never expected that these general research methods would be explained in such an in-depth and accessible way. It eventually changed my perspective on research projects."

"Studying abroad is not merely about acquiring knowledge; it is equally a journey of personal growth and self-discovery, despite the difficulties and challenges encountered along the way."

As she continues her PhD journey, Cherkasskaya remains open to new experiences, ready to embrace the unexpected, and determined to make the most of every opportunity that comes her way.
