The College of International Education of Shanghai University of Engineering Science hosted an immersive autumn cultural research activity for its international students on Nov 19.

A total of 26 international students from 21 countries, including those from Ukraine, Turkiye, Indonesia, Australia, Russia, and Burkina Faso, participated in the activity.

The activity took the form of a city micro-tour, during which students strolled along the Bund, visited the historic Waibaidu Bridge, and enjoyed the picturesque views where the Huangpu River meets Suzhou Creek.

The students also visited landmarks that embody Shanghai's modern development, including the Broadway Mansions, Shanghai People's Heroes Memorial Tower, the Peace Hotel, Chen Yi Square, Shanghai Customs House, and the Bund Signal Tower.

Along the way, students experienced firsthand the history of Shanghai, gaining a deeper understanding of the Bund as a symbol of the city, from its early days as a port to its current status as a metropolis.

The journey concluded at the Hailun Hotel, where students participated in an intangible cultural heritage handicraft workshop, creating Song Dynasty (960-1279) brocade bracelets. Under the guidance of instructors, they crafted their pieces while appreciating the exquisite craftsmanship and elegance of this traditional art form.

Quinn Darby Gibson, a student from Australia, shared that the citywalk offered participants a glimpse into Shanghai's urban charm, where traditional heritage meets modern vibrancy. The cultural workshop, she added, not only taught her a creative skill but also deepened her appreciation for the beauty of classic Chinese artworks.
