The School of Chinese International Education at the Shanghai University of International Business and Economics recently hosted a Chinese culture exchange at Guangfulin Cultural Relics Park in Songjiang district.

A total of 20 international students from nearly 10 countries, including Russia, Japan, South Korea, and Tajikistan, joined local students for an immersive journey of experience, exploration, and communication.

Guangfulin Park, a landmark steeped in millennia of history, was a highlight of the program. The activity kicked off with students gathering in the intangible cultural heritage experience zone, where they savored the Yexie soft cake and explored the craftsmanship of this traditional delicacy.

Under the guidance of the cultural inheritor, participants completed each step of making the cake, from sifting rice flour to filling molds and pressing intricate patterns. The hands-on activity offered them a glimpse into China's dietary philosophy of "nourishment from the five grains" and the symbolism of "rising prosperity" embodied in the cakes, with many students remarking that Chinese cuisine is not only delicious but also rich in cultural significance. Furthermore, the students expressed a desire to share this unique experience with friends back home.

To help international students gain a deeper understanding of the cultural significance, Chinese students thoughtfully prepared "micro-lesson packages" covering Shanghai's history and Songjiang's folk traditions.

Acting as cultural guides, the local students led their foreign peers through the water exhibition hall, Hui-style architectural complexes, Zen temples, and the Bone Needle Square.

At these heritage sites, the students learned about the stories of ancient livelihoods and urban evolution. They captured their experiences with photos and short videos, sharing this cross-cultural trip in real-time on overseas social media platforms throughout the tour.

Reflecting on the event, a student from Laos said that the explanations provided by the Chinese students gave them unique insights into the essence of Chinese culture, while a student from South Korea shared that the charm of Shanghai lies in its perfect blend of millennia-old history and modern vitality.

This activity is part of SUIBE's signature program, designed to provide international students with firsthand experiences of Chinese cultural diversity and Shanghai's urban charm. Through strolling, learning, observing, and conversing, the students bridged language barriers, forged valuable friendships, and strengthened mutual understanding.
