The Shanghai University of Engineering Science organized a cultural tour combining a citywalk with a hands-on Shanghai wonton experience along Huaihai Road in Huangpu district on Nov 28.

The event invited 19 international students from eight countries, including France, Ukraine, Mongolia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and South Africa, to embark on an immersive journey into Shanghai's local culture.

The trip began with a stroll along the commercial stretch of Huaihai Road, allowing students to explore the charm of the metropolitan city. They then moved to Nanchang Road, where they admired the architecture and visited Fuxing Park, experiencing the district's historical and cultural atmosphere.

A highlight of the tour was the visit to the Sinan Mansions' reception hall, which was specially designed to replicate the home of the protagonist from the Shanghai-dialect film Shanghai Wonton, showcasing the daily lifestyle of Shanghai residents in the past. The film's producer welcomed the students and served as a guide, sharing stories behind the film and the essence of Shanghai-style culture. The students also experienced classic Shanghai games such as hopscotch, caroms, and alleyway ping-pong.

Their journey concluded at the time-honored eatery Shengxing Canglangting. Under the guidance of experienced chefs, the students learned to make authentic Shanghai-style vegetable-and-pork wontons. As the steaming bowls of their handmade wontons were served, many students reflected that the experience provided them with a glimpse into Shanghai's unique food culture.

Beyond a memorable hands-on experience, the event allowed students from diverse backgrounds to appreciate Shanghai's open, inclusive, and refined urban charm. By extending education to alleys and streets, the College of International Education promoted Shanghai's city image, fostered friendships, and facilitated cross-cultural exchange.
