Malaysian students foster cultural exchange in Shanghai
Michelle Lee Meng Yee and Boo Rui Qi are international undergraduates from Malaysia majoring in Visual Communication Design at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University. With GPAs of 3.86 and 3.85, respectively, they ranked first and second in their program, and second and third overall among the 288 students in the 2024 cohort at the Academy.
Since arriving in China, Michelle Lee Meng Yee has been passionate about promoting cultural exchange and mutual learning between the two countries. She delivered a speech as the international student representative at the 2024 freshman opening ceremony, sharing her study experience at SHU and her immersion in the multicultural environment.
She has also participated in events such as a cross-cultural art salon and the filming of the college's promotional video. Her contribution to the promotional video for the 2025 Shanghai International Flower Show gained media attention, such as Wenhui Daily.
Beyond her coursework, Michelle Lee Meng Yee places great emphasis on cultivating her practical skills. She participated in the school's creation market carnival to share her innovative concepts, craft choices, and aesthetic vision.
She also enjoys hiking, traveling, and documenting her life in China. She has visited numerous Chinese cities, using her camera to capture memorable moments. For her, these photos are not just travel mementos but a way to forge emotional connections and memories in China.
She said that Shanghai's pace, inclusiveness, and creative atmosphere have propelled her growth, and studying at the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts has helped discover her potential.
Boo Rui Qi has excelled across multiple dimensions, including academics, professional skills, language proficiency, global perspective, and social engagement.
During her freshman year, her design work was selected in the academy's art exhibition. Notably, she was recently admitted to SHU's sixth edition of the on-site exchange program at the United Nations Headquarters for her outstanding academic performance and strong language skills.
As a member of the publicity department for the Malaysian Students' Association in Shanghai, she contributes to various Sino-Malaysian cultural events. She is also active promoter of SHU. In December 2024, she volunteered to host a visiting delegation from Malaysia. Through both online and offline channels, she introduced the university to Malaysian students, encouraging more to choose SHU as their academic home.
Boo is an avid sports enthusiast. As a member of the school's volleyball team, she has represented the university in various city-level competitions with strong results. She also participated in SHU's Sports Festival for two consecutive years, achieving second place in the women's sit-ups event.
In over a year of study, Boo has dedicated herself and reaped meaningful rewards. She believes that the greatest wealth lies in preserving the courage and confidence to embrace challenges.
