ECNU Business Chinese international students enhance cross-cultural business communication abilities
The Business Chinese Program at East China Normal University welcomed nearly 60 international students from more than 10 countries, including the United States, Germany, France, Russia, and Indonesia, during the 2025 fall semester.
Beyond systematic instruction in Business Chinese, the students enhanced their business acumen and cross-cultural communication skills through a wide range of extracurricular activities.
The program incorporated themed social practice components tailored to different proficiency levels. Advanced-level students visited IKEA to conduct on-site research on the brand's localization strategy; pre-advanced students explored the China Securities Museum to learn the development of China's financial industry; while intermediate-level students participated in an imported food expo, immersing themselves in commodity trading.
To further enrich the learning experience and encourage interaction across class levels, the program organized three Chinese Corner events. Advanced and pre-advanced classes jointly held a bidding and deal-themed auction activity, enabling students to apply Business Chinese in real-world scenarios. Meanwhile, intermediate-level students participated in a "future innovators" themed activity.
Classroom teaching was equally dynamic. Role-playing exercises, group presentations, and advertising design competitions made language learning more engaging and practical. Chinese students were invited to join the classes, fostering cross-cultural discussions on business topics.
Participants also engaged in a variety of field-based learning activities. Intermediate-level students conducted street interviews on the topic of the latest business news. The pre-advanced class visited a city park, interviewing residents from different age groups to explore trends in rising prices and their underlying causes. Advanced-level students visited exhibition venues to engage in face-to-face exchanges with corporate representatives, exploring potential cooperation in real business settings.
In addition, the program included an immersive tech-business activity in the Tesla Museum, where participants attended technical briefings and took part in test drives to experience the company’s core technological strengths firsthand.
Reflecting on the program, many students said that they not only accumulated practical Business Chinese skills but also broadened their horizons while enhancing their cross-cultural business communication abilities.
