Adidas Originals opens new concept store at Zhangyuan
German sportswear brand adidas Originals launched its new concept store at Zhangyuan on a trial basis on Dec 23.
On its first day of operation, the store recorded the highest single-store sales nationwide, quickly emerging as one of the city's most talked-about year-end fashion destinations.
Designed as a next-generation concept space, the Zhangyuan store showcases adidas Originals' strengths in design, product innovation, and in-store experience. With its immersive layout, locally inspired displays, and a lineup of popular new releases, the store moves beyond traditional retail, positioning itself as a lifestyle destination that brings together culture, social interaction, and street fashion.
In its design approach, the store draws inspiration from Zhangyuan's distinctive Shanghai-style heritage. While preserving the original Shikumen building structure and wooden exterior details, adidas Originals subtly integrates its iconic three stripes and Trefoil logo throughout the space. Exposed brick walls and contemporary design elements sit side by side, creating a balance between historical character and modern aesthetics.
One of the store's standout areas features a new Chinese-style collection created by the adidas Shanghai Creative Center. With pieces such as silk jackets with traditional frog buttons and the updated Bubble Skirt 2.0, the collection reinterprets Eastern design elements through a modern fashion lens.
The store also includes a dedicated experience zone for its pet collection. Designed around the courtyard spaces typical of Shikumen architecture, the zone presents everyday styling and lifestyle scenes shared by people and their pets.
As the largest and best-preserved cluster of Shikumen architecture in Shanghai, Zhangyuan has been transforming into a specialty shopping destination that blends historic buildings with high-end retail and immersive cultural experiences since the reopening of its western section last year. The arrival of adidas Originals is expected to inject fresh momentum into the site, adding a new cultural and fashion landmark to Shanghai's year-end shopping scene.
