Balenciaga opens largest China store in Shanghai center
Spanish luxury fashion house Balenciaga unveiled its largest store in China at Shanghai's HKRI Taikoo Hui shopping center on Dec 12.
Balenciaga – which is headquartered in Paris – designs, manufactures and markets ready-to-wear footwear, handbags and accessories and licenses its name and branding to Coty for fragrances.
Spanning 940 square meters, the flagship store is located on the iconic West Nanjing Road, which is a Shanghai luxury retail hotspot.
To celebrate the opening, the store is featuring new collections of ready-to-wear, shoes, handbags, jewelry, eyewear and accessories, along with other exclusive items.
The store's design is said to embody Balenciaga's industrial aesthetic, offering a bold reinterpretation of luxury retail.
The curved exterior wall, made of smoked glass panels with transparent sections, invites passersby to glimpse the interiors, which blend sustainability and artistry.
Inside, exposed structural elements like beams and steel frames complement weathered finishes, reflecting a balance between modernism and brand heritage.
Highlights include the pre-sale launch of the Modu bag, inspired by Shanghai's nickname "Magic City" – along with the Bel Air bags and the new Hike sneakers, designed with mountaineering elements.
An exclusive Metalheads T-shirt, first shown in Balenciaga's Haute Couture collection, is also available for the first time outside Paris.
Additionally, the store is debuting a custom Apple Vision Pro headset, offering immersive 360-degree virtual experiences of Balenciaga's latest collections and iconic locations.
To enhance the opening, Balenciaga released Balenciaga Music I, featuring pianist Wu Muye, whose performance bridges classical and modern influences.
