Memorial of CPC's founding congress emerges as most popular museum in 2023
The Memorial of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has emerged as the most popular museum among all others in Shanghai, according to a recent annual report on local museums in 2023.
The report, released by the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism, revealed that the city's museums collectively welcomed a record-high of 30.99 million visitors throughout the last year.
Standing out with an impressive 2.94 million visits in the past year, the Memorial of the First National Congress of the CPC surpassed other renowned museums in the city, including the Shanghai Natural History Museum, Shanghai Yuyuan Garden, and the Shanghai Museum.
The memorial, which consists of the site of the first CPC National Congress, an oath-taking hall, and an exhibition area spanning 3,400 square meters, has become a popular destination for visitors from home and abroad. The exhibition area, which opened to the public in 2021 in celebration of the Party's centenary anniversary, features more than 1,100 selected items that highlight the Party's history, such as a total of 72 versions of The Communist Manifesto.
As of the end of 2023, Shanghai boasts a total of 165 museums, indicating that there is approximately one museum for every 151,000 residents in the city, which is significantly higher than the national average. These museums are classified into various themes, with 48 dedicated to history, nine focused on art, and seven specializing in science and technology.
2023 saw the addition of seven new museums in Shanghai, including notable establishments such as the Shanghai Jiao Tong University History Museum, the Shanghai Broadcasting Museum, and the Shanghai WorldSkills Museum.
Collectively, the city's museums house an impressive 2.26 million sets of collections, with 239,000 of these comprising precious cultural relics. The renowned Shanghai Museum alone boasts a collection of 1.02 million cultural relics, representing nearly half of the city's total.
