In the bustling metropolis of Shanghai, a quiet revolution has been unfolding, reshaping the cityscape into a green and sustainable oasis. By the end of 2023, Shanghai had established 26 green ecological urban areas spanning nearly 72.6 square kilometers, according to the Shanghai Green Building Development Report 2023 unveiled at the esteemed 2024 Shanghai International Green Building Forum on June 12.
Titled "Green Buildings and Urban Renewal," the forum showcased Shanghai's progress in spearheading green building initiatives. Pei Xiao, the deputy director of the Shanghai Housing and Urban-Rural Development Commission, highlighted Shanghai's implementation of new energy-saving standards for residential buildings and the imposition of energy consumption limits for public structures. The introduction of the Shanghai Building Carbon Emission Intelligent Supervision Platform last year positioned the city as a trailblazer in comprehensive energy and carbon emission monitoring within the construction sector.
The previous year also marked the successful conclusion of the second round of star-rated green ecological urban area pilot projects in strategic locations such as Pudong New Area, Lin-gang Special Area, and the districts of Hongkou, Baoshan, Jiading, and Chongming.
The report underscored Shanghai's achievements in executing ultra-low energy projects covering an area of 2.8 million square meters and creating nearly zero-energy buildings across an area of 880,000 square meters by the year's end. Energy-saving renovations were completed on 5.3 million square meters of existing public buildings, including iconic landmarks such as Xintiandi, the Haitong Securities Tower, and the InterContinental Shanghai Harbour City near the Dishui Lake in Lin-gang.
Shanghai's dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable urbanization was also exemplified by the recognition of 10 urban projects as Shanghai Green Ecological Urban Areas since the beginning of the year, comprising three demonstration projects and seven pilot initiatives.
The forum, supported by the Shanghai Housing and Urban-Rural Development Commission and the Shanghai Green Building Council, also featured cutting-edge research on key technologies crucial for green low-carbon development and management in industrial parks.
