During the ongoing Shanghai International Film Festival, Shanghai released a three-year action plan to boost the high quality development of its film industry.
The action plan, which focuses on the development of the city's film industry between 2024 and 2026, is closely aligned with Shanghai's vision to build "a city for the people".
It aims not only to elevate the cinematic experience for its residents, but also to establish the city as a vibrant hub for diverse film culture. This action plan is also set to foster community engagement and enrich the lives of its residents through the power of cinema.
According to the plan, Shanghai will focus on creating a series of distinctively-themed cinemas with clear target audiences. The city will also introduce film exhibitions like weekly interactive film events to better engage with moviegoers. Furthermore, Shanghai will continue its outreach programs in rural areas, schools, military camps, exhibition halls, nursing homes, and commercial districts, offering free screenings in public venues to make cultural experiences more accessible to all.
With 379 cinemas, Shanghai leads the nation in six key indicators, such as box office revenue and the number of movie screens.
