Starting July 19, the Shanghai Metro will expand its "open turnstile" pilot program. In addition to the 32 stations already using the system, 91 more stations will join the trial, bringing the total to 123 stations across 19 metro lines.

Unlike traditional turnstiles that remain closed by default, the "open turnstile" system keeps the flaps open under normal conditions. Passengers simply tap their card or present a QR code to be scanned. Once the screen displays a green arrow, they may walk through directly without waiting for the flaps to open.

This new system is designed to reduce waiting time, improve passenger flow efficiency and make station entry and exit smoother.
