Typhoon Co-May to hit Shanghai, travel alerts activated
Co-May, the eighth typhoon of this year, made landfall on Zhoushan city of Zhejiang province at dawn on July 30. The typhoon is expected to make a second landfall between Fengxian district and the southern Pudong New Area in Shanghai this evening.
According to forecasts, Typhoon Co-May is expected to move into Jiangsu province from Shanghai's Jiading district or Chongming district between 8 pm July 30 and 1 am July 31. By the morning of July 31, the storm's impact on Shanghai will weaken.
During this period, Shanghai will experience strong winds and heavy to torrential rainfall, with gusts in Yangshan Port and coastal areas reaching levels 10 to 11.
Due to the impact of Co-May, the city has suspended some airlines, ferry routes, and trains, while imposing citywide highway speed limits.
Airport: According to the Shanghai Airport Authority, 640 flights will be cancelled on July 30 at Pudong and Hongqiao airports, accounting for about a third of the total flights.
Ferry: All city ferry services have been suspended starting 7 am on July 30.
Railway: Railway authorities will implement speed restrictions on some sections affected by the typhoon, including the Hangzhou-Shenzhen, Shanghai-Hangzhou, Hangzhou-Ningbo, Shanghai-Nanjing, and Beijing-Shanghai lines. Some trains will be temporarily suspended or operate on shortened routes.
However, to meet travel demands, 14 trains, including Ningbo to Jinan (T136), Ningbo to Xi'an (K466/7), and Ningbo to Luoyang (K166/7) on the Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway, will resume operations.
Highway: All highways in Shanghai are under a 60 kilometers per hour speed limit.
Metro: According to the Shanghai Metro Group, there are no plans to suspend metro operations, and services will continue as normal.
The Shanghai Central Meteorological Observatory has issued an orange alert for heavy rain — the second-highest level in its four-tier warning system — and yellow alerts for lightning and typhoons.
The city's traffic authorities advise residents to avoid travel during the typhoon. For residents who must travel, please stay updated on the latest developments and plan accordingly.
