Shanghai Port set a new monthly record in August, handling more than 5.02 million twenty-foot equivalent units of containers.

In the first seven months, the city's total import and export value reached 2.55 trillion yuan ($356.79 billion), up 3.4 percent year-on-year. In July alone, exports grew 8.5 percent while imports rose 10.3 percent.

The record throughput was driven by both seasonal and structural factors.

Strong export demand during the July-September peak season, together with easing China-US trade tensions, lifted volumes.

The port's swift recovery from Typhoon Co-May at the end of July also allowed it to accommodate a surge of vessel calls.

Another key driver has been the Gemini Cooperation, a benchmark collaboration between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd launched earlier this year.

As one of the alliance's key global hubs, Shanghai Port has seen a sharp increase in international transshipment cargo from neighboring countries.

To keep pace with growing demand, Shanghai Port has accelerated its digital and smart transformation while continuing to optimize services.

At the smart command center of Shanghai International Port Group, real-time data on vessel movements, anchorage, and handling operations are integrated to allow precise coordination and faster responses.

Upgrades to two automated terminals have further improved efficiency. In August, Yangshan Phase IV handled more than 710,000 TEUs, while Luojing container terminal processed over 125,000 TEUs, both setting new monthly highs.

The Gemini Cooperation also ranked Shanghai Port first in service quality across its global route network, highlighting its key role in helping the alliance achieve a 90 percent on-time record.
