German-style winter carnival opens near Waitanyuan
A cross-cultural German Christmas market has opened along Yuanmingyuan Road, where mild winter sunshine has set the tone for a month-long celebration running from Nov 26 to Dec 28.
Throughout the season, the historic Waitanyuan buildings have been transformed into a festive winter scene. The centerpiece, as always, is a traditional German Christmas market recreated with its familiar charm. Under glittering lights, the Gothic and Baroque facades in the area take on the look of storybook castles, offering visitors an atmospheric glimpse of a European winter.
More than 45 German-style wooden stalls line the site, filling the air with the scent of grilled sausages, mulled wine, and gingerbread. Craft vendors showcase handmade goods that draw on long-standing German artisanal traditions, echoing the heritage of century-old markets in cities like Trier.
The carnival also features live performances by visiting artists from Germany, including carol singing, folk dance, and hands-on craft workshops designed to share the warmth of German culture.
A charity zone has been added to support community programs, while decorations made from biodegradable materials encourage greener consumption. Surprise gifts are also on offer, blending a cheerful Christmas holiday atmosphere with a nod to sustainability.
