Shanghai International Studies University has launched its Intensive Chinese Language Program (Hongkou Campus) for the 2026 spring semester. Applications are now open, with detailed information below.

Course arrangements

1. Target students:

International students planning to pursue undergraduate studies in Chinese universities, or looking to rapidly improve their Chinese language proficiency.

2. Program objectives:

  • Help students build a systematic foundation in Chinese vocabulary and grammar.
  • Help students develop daily communication skills and the ability to discuss specific topics.
  • After a year of intensive training, students are expected to achieve HSK Level 5 proficiency, meeting the language requirements for undergraduate programs at Chinese universities.

3. Curriculum

1)Basic Chinese courses:

-Comprehensive Chinese courses covering vocabulary, grammar, conversation, and Chinese characters

- Listening

- Reading

- Speaking

2)HSK intensive training courses:

- Focused on HSK exam preparation, with targeted drills in listening, grammar, reading, and comprehensive skills.

4. Program levels

The intensive program is divided into three levels, with a minimum of 10 students per class:

  • Beginner: For students with no prior Chinese learning experience.
  • Elementary: For students with an HSK Level 2 Certificate or at least one semester of Chinese study at the university level.
  • Intermediate: For students with an HSK Level 3 Certificate or at least one academic year of Chinese study at the university level.

Application and program timeline

1. Application deadlines:

  • Spring semester: Dec 31, 2025
  • Autumn semester: June 30, 2026

2. Registration dates:

  • Spring semester: March 9 to 10, 2026
  • Autumn semester: Sept 9 to 11, 2026

3. Course schedule:

There will be 36 teaching sessions per week. One teaching session lasts 45 minutes.

  • Spring semester: Mar 16 to July 10, 2026. The completion certificate will be issued on July 12, 2026.
  • Autumn semester: Sept 21, 2026, to Jan 15, 2027. The completion certificate will be issued on Jan 17, 2027.

 

Eligibility

  • Applicants must possess a high school diploma or higher.
  • Aged between 18 to 50 years old. However, for short-term transfer students, the age limit can be relaxed to 16 to 60 years old.
  • Good health, sufficient financial payment guarantees, and a legal guardian (if required).
  • No record of legal or disciplinary violations while studying or living in China.

Application documents

  • Submit the online application form at http://apply.shisu.edu.cn
  • Prepare the following materials in advance:

1) Copy of graduation certificate

2) Copy of passport

3) Online application fee payment: 500 yuan ($70.47), or $75 via overseas remittance, with payment receipt uploaded.

Note:

  • Supplementary documents may be requested by the school if necessary.
  • All submitted materials and fees are non-refundable upon submission or payment.

 

Tuition

One semester: 17,000 yuan

One academic year: 34,000 yuan

 

Important reminder

Short-term transfer students are not eligible for on-campus dormitories. They should arrange off-campus accommodation independently.
