How to transfer between Shanghai's airports and downtown
Shanghai has two major international airports – Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport.
Passengers can choose different transportation options to travel between the two airports and the city center. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you plan your journey.
Pudong airport handles both international and domestic flights. It is about 30 kilometers from downtown Shanghai and 40 km from Hongqiao airport.
Pudong airport offers a free shuttle bus service between its two terminals. The buses run 24 hours a day, every 10 to 15 minutes.
Transportation options to downtown Shanghai
Buses
There are seven bus lines connecting the airport with the city center. Below is a timetable of the bus lines:
Maglev train
The high-speed maglev train offers a fast ride downtown. You can get off the maglev at Longyang Road Station, where you can transfer to Metro Line 2.
Metro
Metro Line 2 is the cheapest way to travel to and from the airport, with a fare of about 7 yuan ($1). The journey from the Airport Station to the People's Square Station downtown takes about an hour.
Taxi
A taxi ride to the People's Square costs around 180 yuan and takes about 50 minutes.
The taxi pick-up point at Terminal 1 is located outside Arrival Gate 12. Passengers can proceed to Arrival Gate 4 or 8. Exit and walk south to Arrival Gate 12.
The taxi stand at Terminal 2 is located outside Arrival Gate 25.
Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport
Located in western Shanghai, Hongqiao airport is just 13 km from the city center. It primarily serves domestic flights and regional flights within East Asia. The airport has two terminals.

Buses
There are 12 bus routes connecting Hongqiao airport to the city center. Below is a timetable of the bus lines:
Metro
Terminal 1 is served by Metro Line 10, which connects Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
Terminal 2 is served by Metro Lines 10 and 2. The Line 2 provides direct access to the National Exhibition and Convention Center.
Taxi
For those arriving at Hongqiao International Airport, the taxi offers a quick and convenient way to reach the city center. The journey typically takes around 30 minutes and costs between 100 and 150 yuan, depending on traffic.
If you need to travel between the two airports, the good news is that Shanghai's first airport link line is set to begin operations within this year, reducing the travel time between the two airports to just 40 minutes.
