Shanghai sees consumption boom during Spring Festival
Shanghai's online and offline consumption during the Spring Festival holiday amounted to 56.9 billion yuan ($7.91 billion), according to data from the Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory (Shanghai).
During the eight-day holiday from Feb 10 to 17, the total amount of consumption transactions made by visitors to Shanghai reached 15.55 billion yuan, up 21.6 percent from the previous Spring Festival, according to statistics by UnionPay. Visitors from the neighboring Jiangsu province contributed the most, accounting for 20.2 percent of the total. Vistors from Zhejiang, Guangdong, Shandong, and Anhui provinces also spent lavishly. .
According to data from the Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory (Shanghai), the total passenger flow in the city's 35 shopping areas reached 28.73 million during the holiday, an increase of 11.9 percent year-on-year. Among them, around 42 percent were visitors from outside Shanghai based on the signals of their mobile operators.

Data from the Consumer Market Big Data Laboratory (Shanghai) also showed that during the holiday, gold jewelry became the "darling" of festival shopping, registering a more than 16 percent increase in sales in the city's major shopping malls such as the Yuyuan Mall and New World Daimaru.
The catering industry's consumption also experienced a jump of more than 16 percent year-on-year, reaching 5.93 billion yuan. Huanghe Road and the Peace Hotel, which were featured in the recent hit TV drama, Blossoms Shanghai, were popular among visitors. Sales at the Peace Hotel increased by more than 60 percent compared with the 2019 Spring Festival.
