Shanghai to add more schools, preschools this year

Shanghai is set to provide additional and improved services for its preschool and school-age children.

The city will open about 40 new primary and secondary schools while adding, upgrading and expanding 30 kindergartens this year to meet the growing education demand in communities with an inflow of population, announced the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission.

The measures will provide an additional 7,000 first grade seats and 10,000 sixth grade seats in the city's primary schools next semester.

Shanghai will also launch a new project to strengthen the city's junior high school education system with 79 schools included in the effort. Meanwhile, Shanghai is continuously promoting the diversified development of its senior high schools to optimize each student's development.

The city also plans to add at least 7,000 community-based daycare openings and at least 3,000 daycare placements in public kindergartens for pre-kindergarten-age children. A total of 130 kindergartens across the city will also be upgraded.
