Shanghai aims to become world-class center for nuclear power industry

Shanghai aims to become a world-class development center for the nuclear power industry by 2027, according to the city's latest action plan for the high-quality development of the industry from 2024 to 2027.

According to the action plan, the scale of Shanghai's nuclear power industry will reach 60 billion yuan ($8.34 billion) by 2027 with the level of the advanced nuclear power industry foundation and industrial chain modernization significantly improved.

The action plan also proposed Shanghai to become an important source of original nuclear power technology in China with scientific and technological innovation strongly supporting the high-quality development of the industry.

According to the action plan, in the following years, Shanghai will focus on nuclear energy technology innovations to achieve breakthroughs of a batch of key third-generation nuclear power technologies, further improve the economic efficiency and safety of third-generation nuclear power, realize engineering of advanced small reactors, and maintain an international lead in research and development of fourth-generation reactors.

The action plan also proposed the city establish 10 national-level nuclear power industry technology innovation platforms by 2027.
