Shanghai has a greenbelt as 32 parks dot its outer ring
Shanghai has added 11 new eco-parks along the outer ring this year, bringing the total number of eco-parks open to the public to 32.
The ecological parks encircling the city are structured around the Outer Ring Road. Togethe they connect 10 wedge-shaped green spaces within the outer ring and 17 ecological interval zones out of it.
The construction of the outer ring greenbelt began in 1995, with approximately 4,000 hectares of green space.

Last year the first batch of seven outer ring greenbelt parks, such as Fengxiang Zhixiu Eco Park in Baoshan district, Chunguang Park in Putuo district, and Mianqing Park in Pudong New Area opened to the public, attracting many visitors.
Earlier this year, 11 additional parks, including Xiunan Park and Xiaoqin Park in Pudong New Area, Qidonglin Park in Putuo district, and Chunshen Park and Jinmei Park in Minhang district, were completed and opened as planned. With the original 14 parks, there are now a total of 32 parks distributed across both sides of the Outer Ring Road.

According to municipal plan, another eight parks are scheduled to be completed and opened this year, with an additional 10 parks expected to be finished and opened next year. This will bring the total number of surrounding parks to 50 along the Outer Ring Road.
The Outer Ring Road greenbelt parks prioritize ecological preservation and implement various measures, including nurturing and renewing woodland, optimizing plant communities, facilitating water system connectivity, and enhancing water quality, all aimed at fostering harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

To meet the diverse needs of residents and visitors, the parks have expanded their facilities, including seating, pavilions, restrooms, parking lots, children's play areas, and fitness equipment. New measures have been adopted to regulate large plaza areas, parking lots, and building facilities.
