Shanghai Museum is planning and constructing its third branch, the north branch, along the Huangpu riverside of Yangpu district, following its locations at the People's Square and the east branch in Pudong New Area, according to the information office of the Yangpu district government.

The north branch aims to be a benchmark against the highest international standards and to establish itself as a globally influential museum of ancient ships and archaeology, a world-class underwater archaeology research center, and an exhibition window to the international shipping and trade industry.

In comparison, the museum's east branch – Shanghai Museum East – serves as a way for the world to view China, housing collections of cultural relics from various historical periods and categories across China. The People's Square Branch acts as a window for China to view the world, with plans to become a key venue showcasing global civilizations and artistic exchanges, featuring numerous exhibitions related to world art.

To date, the total number of museums registered with the National Cultural Heritage Administration has surpassed 6,500. The Shanghai Museum boasts a collection of over one million artifacts, with nearly 150,000 being precious cultural relics. It is renowned worldwide for having the most comprehensive collection of ancient Chinese art across 33 major categories.
